Where is California's Central Coast?

What is the Central Coast known for?

Uncrowded beaches, the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley wine regions, Hearst Castle, elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, and Highway 1. It is markedly quieter and less expensive than either the Bay Area or Southern California coastline.

How do I get to the Central Coast?

San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) is the closest, about 15 minutes from Avila Beach. Santa Barbara is roughly 90 minutes south by car and Los Angeles about 3 hours. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight both stop in San Luis Obispo.

When is the best time to visit?

September is the warmest month on the Central Coast and quieter than August, which makes early autumn the sweet spot. Late spring is green and mild. June often brings coastal fog in the mornings, though the sheltered south-facing position of Avila Beach clears earlier than much of the coast.
